Religion

Breakdown: Hindu 74.82%, Buddhist 16.00%, Muslim 5.00%, Christian 1.89%, Other religions 1.70%, non-Religious/other 0.50%, Sikh 0.06%, and Baha’i 0.03%. Nepal is the world’s only Hindu kingdom. Hinduism is recognized as the national religion, but the constitution guarantees some religious freedom of other faiths. Official religion figures of the 1991 census are suspect, with minority religions underrepresented.

Locals will tell you that because the way the question is worded most converted Hindus will still say they are Hindu because it seems to be a question of family history. It is impossible to determine the actual percentage of Christians in Nepal. Our Nepali friends claim Nepal is the fastest growing body of Christians in Asia.

Nepal is considered the worlds only officially Hindu state

Missionary Opportunity: Nepal’s church has grown. At the height of persecution in 1990, there were 200,000 Christians; but by the year 2000, there were estimates of up to 500,000 Christians in the country. Missions have played a remarkable supportive role in improving health, agriculture and education.
