Union of Myanmar / Burma

Victory in Myanmar

We have trained several students from Myanmar at VBCI Thailand. Pastor Ram Than Oak pastors a Victory Church in Rangoon, and one of our current VBCI students started a children's home last year, although it is illegal in Myanmar to do so.

During the terrible ordeal of Cyclone Nargis, another of our VBCI students from Myanmar stepped up to the plate. With donations from our team in hand, he traveled into devastated Myanmar to work with pastors and village elders in aid distribution.

As donations for Burma come into the ministry, this student has continued to put his life at risk, entering back into Myanmar with aid time and again.

Over the next few years this student, as well as two former students who have moved to Rangoon, will work together with Pastor Ram and other local churches to plant new churches and develop long term solutions to rebuild Myanmar.

Religion

Myanmar has been designated a Country of Particular Concern by the U.S. State Department for its severe religious freedom violations, every year since 1999. Christians, it seems, have become "the preferred targets of one of the world's most brutal regimes."

Public evangelism is prohibited in Myanmar, which is 82% Buddhist and 8 % Christian. Most Christian missions were expelled in 1966.

Despite persecution, the church in Myanmar is growing by 5 % a year.
